Status: New York Mets third baseman. Five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner.
Ht: 6-0 Wt: 200
DOB: December 20, 1982 In: Norfolk, VA
Baseball Inspirations: “I grew up a Met fan. I idolized guys like HoJo, Gary Carter. But non-Mets – Cal Ripken. I got a chance to go up and see Baltimore play a couple of times and he just stood out to me. The way he played the game every day and wanted to be in the lineup every day.”
Nicknames: “It’s just things like D-Wright, some people call me D-
Dub. Rook. Hollywood.”
Hobbies/Interests: “Golf. That’s pretty much it. I like to hang out with my brothers – I have three younger brothers.”
Favorite Movies: “Braveheart. I like all the Godfathers. Gladiator. Funny-wise, I like Super Troopers and all the Adam Sandler stuff.”
Favorite TV Shows: “SportsCenter, any thing sports related.”
Musical Tastes: “Everything. I got everything right now in my car. I got a six-disc CD changer. I think I have everything from rap to country to R&B to Frank Sinatra to Linkin Park, Jay-Z, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Pretty much everything, depends on what mood I’m in.”
Early Baseball Memory: “I can remember playing whiffle ball in the backyard at my grandfather’s house with my grandfather and my dad. I was four or five with whiffle balls and whiffle bats.”
First Job: “I worked very briefly at a batting cage in high school, in Chesapeke, VA (age 15). It was kind of, more or less, go up there and fill in for some people every now and then. Mainly it was to get up there and hit for free [smiles].”
First Car: “An ‘85 or ‘86 S10 Chevrolet pickup. (Color?) White. Actually it was like rust.”
Favorite Meal: “Big, like, deli kind of sandwich type person. Real simple, just a sandwich – turkey or tuna. I like Japanese steakhouse for dinner.”
Favorite Breakfast Cereal: “Raisin Bran.”
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Chocolate.”
Pre-Game Feeling: “Just try to visualize being successful. I think this game is so mental that you want to visualize making the play or visualize hitting a line drive right up the middle. So it’s a lot of visualizing, getting focused on being in the zone. Just try to keep it focused on what I need to do.”
Greatest Sports Moment: “Called up, July 26, 2004. My debut. The ovation and the way that the crowd reacted. It sent chills down your spine, it’s something I’ll never forget.”
Most Painful Moment: “Any day that I don’t get a hit [smiles].”
Funny Baseball Memory: “Oh yeah, the game is a bunch of big kids playing a game and you have to look at it that way. I told myself from day one, As soon as it becomes like a job and it feels like I’m going to work every day, it’s time to try something else.”
Embarrassing Baseball Memory: “Dropping a pop-up. We were on FOX Game Of The Week – and dropping a pop-up on national television. (Who hit it?) Hee-Seop Choi.”
Favorite Uniforms: “Besides ours – I’m a big fan of our uniforms – probably just the classic Boston look.”
Favorite Ballpark: “I love playing in New York. The energy and the edge and the excitement that New York has, no one else has. I played in some good baseball cities but nothing has the kind of energy and excitement that New York has. New York sports fans are the greatest in the world.”
Closest Met Friends: “The 24 guys we have in this clubhouse. Because it’s like a big fraternity, you have 24 brothers for 7-8 months out of the year.”
Funniest Players Enccountered: “Pedro Martinez. Just his demeanor. The way he carries himself. I mean, he knows when to work and he knows when to cut up and keep the clubhouse loose. It’s everything – from his hair, to the little dance that he does. One of the best things about winning was coming here in the clubhouse after a win and seeing him dancing over there in the corner [smiles].”
Toughest Competitors: “The fiercest competitors – the guys like Pedro Martinez, the guys that expect to go out there and expect to win, every single game.”
Toughest Pitchers Faced: “Lidge, Dontrelle Willis, Roger Clemens, to name a few.”
People Qualities Most Admired: “Honesty. And the ability to laugh at yourself. And just good morals. The integrity. If you’re just a solid person, if you have a good, solid foundation, then it’s pretty easy to get along with you. Just having good morals and good integrity. And be able to laugh at yourself. Because you gotta have fun with life.”
