Status: St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach.

DOB: October 1, 1963 In: Pomona, CA

Nicknames: “Mac, Big Mac.”

Childhood Dream: “Policeman. I’ve always loved law enforcement.”

Favorite Movies: “Midnight Express, Driving Miss Daisy.”

First Job: “Pro baseball. In Modesto (age 21).”

First Car: “1984 Toyota Supra (white).”

Early Baseball Memory: “Hitting a home run in my first at-bat in Little League (age 10). To right field. My team was the A’s. Totally excited by that.”

Hobbies/Interests: “Golf.”

Favorite Meal: “I love all meals [laughs]. Chinese food, or pasta with chicken, and pizza. About a three-way tie.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Pralines and cream.”

Pre-Game Feeling: “Pretty quiet. Just collecting my thoughts. Going over the pitcher. Thinking of what I have to do.”

Greatest Sports Moment: “The home run in the World Series in 1989 with the A’s. Game-winning home run off Jay Howell in game three. Bottom of the ninth, game tied 1-1. I was more or less numb running around the bases. Kids dream about that, mimic that playing in the street. And hitting the 62nd home run to break Roger Maris’ (single-season home run) record.”

Most Painful Moment: “1991. I was at the bottom (hit .201 for the season). Felt so bad. I asked Tony LaRussa to keep me out of the lineup. And just two years earlier I was at the top in the World Series.”

Funniest Player Encountered: “Dave Parker. The quickest-witted person I’ve ever met in my life. The guy just fired back. His antics were unbelievable. He’s one of the reasons why we won. He kept the locker room so loose and relaxed.”

Toughest Competitor Encountered: “Tony LaRussa. As you can see when you see him on the field. It’s pretty obvious. He’s very into the game. Very prepared. And very much into protecting his players.”

Career Accomplishments: MLB first baseman from 1986-2001 with Oakland A’s and St. Louis Cardinals; 1989 World Series Champion; 12-time All Star; 1987 A.L. Rookie of the Year; MLB All-Century Team; 583 career HRs, 1414 career RBIs and .263 career average.

    tough questions

  2. Nancy McShea says:

We may share an affection for pralines ‘n cream, the movie “Driving Miss Daisy” and a love of baseball in childhood, but bottom line, I’ll continue to treasure the legacy of guys like Willie Mays ’cause McGwire has tarnished the game.

  3. Scoop Malinowski says:

I am just happy to do a Biofile with Mark McGwire, was very lucky to get him. Hope you enjoyed his Biofile.

  4. Nancy McShea says:

I did. I also thought it was interesting and ironic that he dreamed of being a policeman, made it big in sports and then sabotaged the code of ethics in baseball.

  5. Nancy McShea says:

I always comment to my husband that football players are on something and not just today. I once saw Mark Gastineau in spandex in a gym and I was overwhelmed. Yikes!!!

  6. riese says:

  7. riesenelson says:
