Early Track & Field Memory: Â ”In elementary school when I was in fourth grade, we had a meet between the area’s elementary schools. It was only supposed to be fifth-graders. My gym teacher was able to get me to compete in that. And I won first-place blue ribbons in three events – 50 meters, 100 meters and eraser shuttle. I was the only fourth grader in that.”
Pre-Race Feeling: Â ”I’m nervous. Thinking about executing. Listening for the starter to hit the gun. And just running the best I could. To be number one you have to train like you’re number two.”
Favorite Movie: Â ”Top Gun.”
Musical Tastes: Â ”Rap, R&B, DMX, Lauryn Hill.”
First Job: Â ”As a janitor cleaning up my old church, Third Street Church Of God (age 16).”

Funny Track & Field Memory: Â ”My funniest memory was when we were in Japan. And Jon Drummond said that he wouldn’t let a Japanese man beat him. And he got beat by a Japanese man! So that was very funny.”
Favorite Meal: Â ”I have so many [laughs]. Crab legs.”
Favorite Breakfast Cereal: Â ”Oatmeal with raisins.”
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Â ”Strawberry.”
Greatest Sports Moment: Â ”Winning the Olympic gold medal, the finish (2000 in Sydney). It’s unexplainable. You feel so great. It’s something…I wish I could explain it. And setting the world record.”
Most Painful Moment: Â ”When I didn’t make the Olympic Team in 1996. Because it was a very hard year for me. I was hurt (hamstring) for most of the year and I felt that I really should’ve been on the team.”
People Qualities Most Admired: Â ”People who love to do things. I love working with kids. So when I see people with kids or doing some kind of community work like that, I love that type.”
