Status: ATP #102. Reached his second ATP quarterfinal in 2010 in Newport. Reached second round at this year’s Wimbledon.

Ht: 6-5 Wt: 180

DOB: December 8, 1984 In: Celle, Germany

First Tennis Memory: “The courts back at home where I started playing in Germany. It’s a long time ago.”

Nicknames: “Just one – Dreddy.”

Hobbies/Leisure Activities: “Listen to music all day basically. I’m on my computer a lot. Catching up with friends online.”

Tennis Inspirations: “As in idols? Early on, when they were still playing – Noah, Safin. Mainly those two. Agassi.”

Last Book Read: “Dan Brown, Illuminati.”

Favorite Movies: “I watched Karate Kid this week. Pretty good movie. Pretty much everything Denzel Washington was in. He’s a really good actor, so.”

Favorite TV Show: “Californication.”

Musical Tastes: “Hip-hop, R&B, Lil Wayne, Drake.”

First Job: “Tennis [laughs].”

First Car: “Camper Volkswagen.”

Current Car: “Camper (white).”

Pre-Match Feeling: “It always varies. Never the same. It always varies, depends on where I am, who I have around me, who’s with me.”

Favorite Meal: “No favorite meal actually.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Vanilla.”

Childhood Dream: “I was always tennis. Never been anything else.”

Greatest Sports Moment: “Winning the $100,000 Challenger in South Africa, Soweto (d. Izak van der Merwe 76 63). This year. (Why?) It’s the biggest win of my career, that got me closest to the top 100. And it’s a really great feeling winning there in Soweto, with the whole thing going on there with blacks and whites.”

Most Painful Moment: “Probably losing 0-0 to Jerome Haehnel in Basel on center court, three years ago. 0-0 indoors. Shouldn’t be 0-0 with my serve. (What happened that day?) I have no idea. Everything. And nothing [smiles].”

Which Matches Did You Feel At Your Very Best: “Under all the terms, the Querrey match in Newport. It’s a grass court, short match (64 63 in 47 minutes). Definitely served unbelievable – first serves won – 33 out of 34 – 97%. One point that when I put a first serve in that he made a point on my serve. First serve percentage 66%. That’s very good. I don’t think I’m going to have a day where I serve 80 or 90%. That’s probably not going to happen. I’m pretty happy to serve 60-70%, especially on these courts.”

Closest Tennis Friends: “American guys, Armitraj family, Rajeev Ram and a bunch of German guys – Stadler, Phau, Bozo (Bozoljac).”

Funniest Players Encountered: “Probably that’s some of the guys you hang around with. If you don’t hang around with anyone, the guy can’t be funny.”

Toughest Competitors Encountered: “I would say everybody. Because no one wants to lose, everybody wants to win. So they’re basically always fighting. No one gives it easy to you.”

Embarrassing Tennis Memory: “Nope.”

Strangest Match: “No, none of that Mahut stuff [smiles].”

Favorite Players To Watch: “Watching my friends at a tournament. There’s not anyone I would say that I would prefer to watch. The guys that I hang around with at the tournaments.”

Favorite Sport Outside Tennis: “Nothing.”

Last Vacation: “Never vacation. I would say tennis. Although I wouldn’t say it’s a vacation. Or I could say it’s always a vacation [smiles].”

The Long Journey: “It’s been a really long journey. Basically started – I was living two years in Jamaica where I was gonna play Futures. My parents were thinking of ways of how they can keep me going and playing. My parents aren’t rich or anything, they were like, What can we do? My mom came up with the idea about the camper. Now the investment has paid off. It was hard just traveling with a camper the whole time, living in there, practicing. It’s not easy when you’re beginning your 20′s and you’re still young. It’s not exactly the ideal way to play tennis. But it definitely worked out and got me through a couple of tough times which definitely helps me on the court.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “Nice, friendly people who like to have fun.”

Favorite Movies: “Oh my goodness. I like Seabiscuit [laughs]. Troy.”

Favorite TV Show: “SportsCenter.”

Musical Tastes: “I listen to everything, Outkast, T.I.”

Last Book Read: “I don’t really read books like that.”

First Job: “I don’t even remember. Oh, Boys Club in Atlanta.”

First Car: “Isuzu I-Mark.”

Current Car: “Cadillac DeVille (silver).”

Pre-Race Feeling: “Just concentrate on my race plan.”

Favorite Meal: “I like lobster.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Chocolate.”

Greatest Sports Moment: “2008 Beijing Olympics. (Why?) Because nobody thought I would be there, I was the underdog and I ran the fastest time in my career.”

Most Painful Moment: “I don’t know. I had a lot of them moments. I guess my most painful moment was 2001 after winning the Olympics, not making it to the final of the World Championships. I was in very good shape. Very good shape. But I got a sinus infection and I was weak and took a beating.”

Favorite Places To Compete: “I love Zurich. Crowd is electric. Track is fast. It’s a great meet to compete at.”

Favorite Athletes To Watch: “Dwight Phillips in the long jump. Terrance Trammel in the 110 hurdles. And LaShaun Merritt in the 400.”

Funny Career Memory: “I think the funniest moment, to me, was my jock strap broke in the middle of one of my races. Oh my goodness, it was in Switzerland – Lausanne, ‘99 or 2000. I could not believe this, right in the middle of the race. Came off a hurdle – snap. I think I got second to Derrick Adkins.”

Last Vacation: “Puerto Rico.”

Favorite Sport To Watch Outside Track: “Basketball.”

Most Memorable Race: “Is 2000 Games, out of lane one.”

Status: Emmy Award winning actor, author and artist.

DOB: “I’m an old SOB – April 30.” In: New York City

Hobbies/Interests: “I paint when I’m brooding. If I can’t sleep and I’m up at night, I’m throwing some paint on canvas. Most is terrible, some is good. But I stick it up on the wall anyway. As an actor/writer, it overlaps hobbies. That’s where my enthusiasm is – acting/writing.”

Favorite Movies: “I was knocked out by Besieged by Bertolucci. Just a gorgeous movie. Great filmmaker. And, of course, Casablanca. The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Victor MacLaglen.”

Favorite TV Show: “Law & Order – which won me an Emmy. I’m prejudiced [smiles].”

Musical Tastes: “The three Irish baritones. They’re a pisser. Magnificent. But I’m open for all music – classical, pop. Don’t get much out of the rap though, maybe I’m too old.”

Favorite Meal: “Haha, I guess macaroni and meatballs.”

Favorite Breakfast Cereal: “None. I’ll eat bacon or a piece of meat.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Chocolate.”

First Job: “Boy oh boy, loading cases for Pepsi Cola in a factory in Long Island City (age 15).”

Pre-Performance Feeling: “Close to sleep as possible. Where tension is as gone as possible. Tension is debilitating. Close to sleep as possible. Do whatever I have to do to get there.”

Early Career Memory: “Very early I played a soap opera – Edge Of Night – three or four performances in it. About 40 years ago. I was on the bus and a lady with a package under her arm keeps looking at me. It was my first professional job. She recognized me. I was so thrilled that she knew me I wouldn’t let her alone [smiles]. Carried her packages all the way home to Corona. I needed to hear more criticism [laughs]!”

Greatest Career Moment: “Of my career…oddly enough, it was being…I was trying hard to get in Mickey Blue Eyes. I had to go back a few times (for auditions). I really wanted the work. And the last time I went was with Hugh Grant, Elizabeth Hurley and the director. They ran, all three down the hall, saying, ‘Please work with us in our movie. We need you bad.’ They decided right then. Right after Christmas, so it was very nice. At first I thought I stole something. Such a great feeling. Usually they make you wait.”

Most Painful Moment: “One moment – I won’t say what movie, when they eliminated a couple of scenes – just before an exhibition. And the movie flopped. A shame. They didn’t have to cut those scenes. I was in those scenes.”

Funny Memory: “Doing a play with Robert DeNiro – ‘Cuba And His Teddy Bear’ at the Public Theatre. Big success, in ‘85. Ralph Macchio. Then we took it to Broadway. A fight scene on stage. And the door handle broke off when we banged into the door. We were on stage but we were supposed to be off. I jump out of view. I look at DeNiro and he’s cracking up, trying to break the door down. Fun to see him laughing his ass off. The producer had to stand up in the audience to say, There was a little technical problem.”

Favorite Vacation Spot: “Boy, that’s hard. Would you believe I never went on vacation. My girlfriend has to plan wherever I go when I’m working.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “Generosity – whether it’s pocketbook or spiritual. Usually if he’s tight-fisted, he’s tight in all ways.”

Career Accomplishments: Performed roles in such films as Rocky, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Once Upon A Time In America, Last Exit To Brooklyn, Amityville II: The Possession. Acted in TV shows: Miami Vice, The Sopranos, Baretta, Law & Order, M*A*S*H.

DOB: November 30, 1977 In: Miami, FL

Hobbies/Interests: “Actually, right now in my life, I’m so busy with work I have no time for a hobby. I run a record label (Dim Mak Records) full time, I started a clothing line (Dim Mak Collections), and I deejay and travel a lot, so. I’m more like trying to be organized and make sure that I have the right teams in the right areas and that I’m picking up the right people that can help manage all the different things that I’ve got going on. My main focus is the label, the clothing line and deejaying. And I’m producing music now too.”

Favorite Movie: “La Femme Nikita – is the first that pops in my head. I have more but I can’t think of them right now.”

Favorite TV Show: “Freaks and Geeks.”

Musical Tastes: “I love Dolly Parton. I love Bloc Party. I love Elton John. Michael Jackson. Prince. The Rakes. Oh No Oh My. Scanners. Whitey. And Pony Up.”

First Job: “I worked in a swap meet in LA when I was 12, I was like the busboy.”

First Car: “Isuzu Rodeo. (Color?) Black.”

Pre-Work Feeling: “Well if I’m not like having a serious hangover from the night before, I can deejay really good. If I’m not too busy thinking about my hangover. If it’s like a really big event, I get nervous no matter what.”

Favorite Meal: “Japanese food.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Green tea ice cream.”

Greatest Career Moment: “The best moment was when I signed a band called Bloc Party. And I got the test presses made of their first EP, that I released. And I started playing that. Right when I dropped the needle on ‘Banquet’ – before anyone turned – people were just jumping. Because they knew instantly it was a good song.”

Most Painful Moment: “My memory is the most painful moment of my career [smiles]. I leave needles everywhere, and headphones in Vegas and New York and Miami. I lose everything [smiles].”

Embarrassing Memory: “Got so many. So many. At The Troubadour when my shit was skipping and I couldn’t control it, at a Hard Fly show. Skipping like crazy and I couldn’t control it.”

Childhood Dream: “I wanted to become Bruce Lee.”

Favorite Performers: “Gaft Punk. RK Fire. Uffie.”

Last Halloween Costume: “What was I? Yellow Peril. (What’s that?) It’s like a yellow costume and I just made it up. I was like attacking people [laughs].”

People Qualities Most Admired: “I like, I like fucking real people, that – it’s such a vague word ‘real’ but. But like you could kinda figure somebody out in 10 minutes, talking to them. Like what they’re gonna bring out, what they’re gonna say first. People that don’t want to like climb some ladder, they just want to be themselves and they’re really proud about of being themselves. I don’t know if that’s a word – what is that word [smiles]?…People that are truly original.”

First Job: “Hmm, I can’t remember…I guess I was a camp counselor for kids in Boston.”

First Car: “An ‘86 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. (Color?) Purple [smiles].”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Chocolate chip.”

Early Career Memory: “I reviewed Ken Kalfus’s PS 239 – it was a book of stories – and I knew him a little bit and he wrote me an e-mail and he said, That was a real nice review and my publishers are very happy too. And I was like, I think I was too nice. And he’s like, No, you called one of my stories gratuitous… You asshole [laughs]!”

Greatest Career Moment: “I wrote a review of Martin Amis for The Nation. And then I saw Vivian Gornick at a party. And she said: “You wrote that review of Martin Amis? I loved that.” And she put her hand on my arm.”

Most Painful Moment: “Uuhh. I wrote a review about (VS) Naipaul, who won the Nobel Prize a couple of years ago. But the new book wasn’t very good. And I said it wasn’t very good. And somebody e-mailed and I mixed up – one guy’s name was Peter and the other guy’s name was Richard. And I mixed up the names and my editor’s like, I think we need to run a correction [smiles]. Because you mixed up the names.”

Childhood Dream: “I wanted to be Dostoevsky. Yeah.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “I guess, you live in New York, the wrong time and people are sometimes lying to you, like, I love what you wrote, your thing that you wrote, so great. So, honesty. Honesty because people are full of shit [laughs].”

Status: WBC/IBF Light Welterweight champion. Pro record is 20-0 (13 KO’s).

Ht: 5-8 Wt: 140

DOB: February 10, 1987 In: St. Louis, MO

Boxing Inspirations: “For people who don’t know me, I grew up with Cory Spinks, he’s been a great inspiration for me. He’s been in the same gym with me. He’s been a great experience. But I’m self motivated myself. I just look at the game, see who’s all inside the game – I look at that and take it upon myself to motivate myself and inspire myself to be the best.”

Nicknames: “Besides The Great, Smiley. I smile a lot. They call me Smiley. Or they call me Dangerous D. Just different names that’s got to do with boxing and that knows that I’m dedicated to boxing, anything like that.”

Hobbies/Leisure Activities: “Think about boxing. Besides that, I don’t know. 24-7 I think about boxing. I want to be undisputed champion. That’s my hobby. I’m thinking about what can I do to progress my talent and all that. Basketball sometimes I can do basketball. I like to eat [smiles]. That’s one of my hobbies. Other than that, boxing is my main goal right now.”

Favorite Movies: “I like scary movies, exciting movies, gore movies, horror and stuff like that. I like the Jasons and Michael Myers movies whenever they come on.”

Last Book Read: “Jesus Christ – a questionaire book about God. I read in China, very informative. A book about me knowing why am I Christian and what am I Christian for. I’m not a Christian just because somebody tells me I am. 90% of people don’t know why they’re Christian. So I was reading into that.”

Musical Tastes: “Rap, I like TI or Young Joc.”

Favorite TV Show: “Comedy, Jamie Foxx or Steve Harvey, Martin. I like the comedy aspect of TV shows.”

First Boxing Memory: “When I won my first national Silver Gloves title, I remember that (in Lenexa, Kansas). I was nine or ten. I fought every day and won the whole thing. That was my first time going. It felt good because everybody was looking at me. I felt like I accomplished a lot. So I never forgot it. Then I came home and I was in the newspaper for the first time in my whole life. So that was pretty good.”

First Job: “I worked at Busch Stadium with St. Louis Cardinals. I was a vendor when I was 13 selling
cotton candy. It didn’t work out well for me. It wasn’t my fault. Actually, I was working with a girl, we were selling lemonade. She was actually making the lemonade and she was cutting the knife and she licked the knife. A lady saw her and reported that she liked the knife and she fired both of us – and it really wasn’t my fault.”

First Car: “Ford Escort (green), 1995.”

Current Car: “Monte Carlo 2002. Silver and smoke gray. Got some 20-inch rims on it.”

Favorite Meal: “Chicken and macaroni. No, I take it back, lasagna and chicken.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Vanilla.”

Pre-Fight Feeling: “Just think about it all. Thinking about going in there and executing the gameplan that we have. That I’ve prepared myself. Doing the checklist. Making sure I have my mouthpiece, cup, all that stuff. And just getting physically, mentally focused. Just think about what I’ve been going through my whole career. And that motivates me. And my dad. Think about my daughter, how is she back at home. Just think about all different kinds of stuff – too motivate me, get me pumped up and ready to show the crowd The Great is gonna be champion.”

Greatest Sports Moment: “So far, becoming champion (d. Junior Witter for WBC title in 2009 and Urango for IBF in 2010). Most boxers never get a chance to be champion of the world. It’s a blessing. I’m like, wow. So it motivates me.”

Most Painful Moment: “I’d say when I lost my dad. I was in Olympic Trials, he didn’t pass yet. I lost in the last day of Olympic Trials to Rock Allen. It was 16-16. When I did get back, he got real sick. That’s when he passed. When I did get back, it was hard to say that I lost. Because he would have really looked forward to me winning there. It was okay but that was one of the most painful moments that I can think of.”

Funny Boxing Memory: “Me and Cory used to joke around all the time. We’d spar, he’d hit me on top of the head. I’d hit him. I can’t really think of anything funny, boxing is pretty serious in the ring.”

Embarrassing Boxing Memory: “When I fell out of the ring. Amateur and I fell out of the ring at national PAL tournament. We were fighting and I missed him and whooo, fell all the way out of the ring. All out into the judges, crowd.”

Toughest Opponent: “Chop Chop Corley on HBO. He knew what he was doing, he wouldn’t let me slack up. He was on me the whole fight. He made me prove my skills – or he was gonna show me what it’s all about.”

Favorite Fight(s): “I like Mayweather and Gatti. I thought it would be better but he went in there and took him out. I just like to see good, competitive fights.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “Like if I see a person and they have a lot of power, I’ll expect them to be humble and stay humble. And treat people with kindness. Don’t take advantage of people. And just pray to God, just be humble to yourself. Like me, I’m trying to stay humble and pray to God, stay focused, stay in carriage. And don’t let nobody doscourage you.”

Status: Jockey will ride 10-1 shot Devil May Care in Kentucky Derby.

Ht: 5-6 Wt: 110

DOB: November 24, 1971 In: Carolina, Puerto Rico

Childhood Hero: “Well, for the racetrack, I have to say Angel Cordero.”

Hobbies/Interests: “I have no hobby [laughs]. Only my children and my wife. That’s my hobby.”

Nickname: Johnny V.

Favorite Movies: “Wow. I gotta say Dirty Dancing. The Star Wars movies are great movies.”

Favorite TV Show: “Friends.”

Musical Tastes: “All kinds. I like dance music.”

First Job: “Cleaning windows in a hotel in Puerto Rico – Travelodge in San Juan.”

First Car: “Toyota Corolla (gray).”

Early Racing Memory: “It was the Breeder’s Cup race in ‘88. Angel Cordero won one of the races. I watched it on TV, that was in Puerto Rico.”

Favorite Meal: “Anything. I like my rice and beans.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Chocolate.”

Pre-Race Feeling: “Not much. Just a lot of homework. A lot of homework and thinking, What I’m gonna do the best for my horse. How should I be placing it? And also watch the races, race by race. And a lot of prayers [smiles].”

Greatest Sports Moment: “Wow. Well, winning the Belmont Stakes with Rags To Riches (2007). Winning two Breeder’s Cup one day. Winning stakes races in Saratoga. And winning the Travers has been the highlights of my career.”

Most Painful Moment: “Many falls [laughs]. Many falls. That’s what I gotta say, yeah.”

Favorite Racetrack: “Saratoga.”

Funny Memory: “I remember Angel telling me the story how some horse – they made him bark at him. If you bark at him, he’ll run for it [smiles]. I think that was funny. He tried anything, so. Angel told me stories about people telling him instructions about horses. I thought that was a really funny one. It made him run faster.”

Embarrassing Memory: “For myself? I don’t know. Embarrassing for me – screwing up the race. That’s the most embarrassing thing. When you think you can win the race and you messed up the race. That’s embarrassing.”

Favorite Horses: “Oh my God, there’s so many. If I was going to have to name it I would have to name them all [laughs]. I rode so many good horses that were early in my career that actually put my name in different places. There’s a lot or horses that touch my heart, just because they won, lift up my career.”

Childhood Dream: “I look back, I never thought I was gonna be a jockey. That came later, as a teenager. Childhood dream…I just thought I was gonna be a lawyer or accountant, something to do with financials. I was always interested in numbers and money and stuff like that.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “Kindness.”

Family: Wife, Leona; daughter, Lerina; son, Michael.

Status: Trainer of Kentucky Derby hopeful Jackson Bend.

DOB: February 6, 1948 In: New York, N.Y.

Childhood Heroes: “Probably…it’s a good question…Who did I look up to? You say childhood, how old do you want me to be? (Under 18.) Al Kaline. I used to watch him climb the wall at Tiger Stadium. (Over 18?) Joe Namath. Then, the older you get, you realize the heroes are people that work hard, teachers, police officers, the people that struggle, hard-working people, those are the real heroes. You know what I mean?”

Hobbies/Interests: “Go back to the barn in the afternoon – that’s tranquility to me. Watch the horses walk, hang out with the horses. That’s pretty good.”

Favorite Movies: “Boy, there’s a lot of them. One I really liked is Robin Hood, with Errol Flynn. It’s great. My favorite of all-time is The Count of Monte Christo.”

Favorite TV Show: “Gotta be SportsCenter. By far.”

Musical Tastes: “Jazz, Chris Botti.”

Early Racing Memory: “Watching Gun Bow hold on by a nose. I was only a teenager. Puttin’ paper on the Aqueduct chairs when there was like 60,000 people watching Gun Bow hang on by a nose, and I think it was Kelso he beat, or Buck Passer, or one of them. Gun Bow and Kelso – it was unbelievable. Way back when. There was so many people at the track then.”

First Job: “Slicin’ bread up the block where I lived in Ozone Park, Queens. Pete the baker, he was down in the basement cooking bread (age 12). Then I was a delivery boy. Then a hot walker later on when I was 18.”

First Car: “An old ‘56 Oldsmobile (black), like a tank. One of my brother’s bought it for me.”

Pre-Race Feeling: “Just like everybody else – butterflies. If you get the break. Can’t win all the time, you know that, but…you just have those feelings, you know?”

Favorite Meal: “Probably the right type of salad. Pasta with a light, light sauce. Anything plain that’s cooked with real style. I don’t want anything heavy or overbearing. It could be any kind of food.”

Favorite Breakfast Cereal: “Granola.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Soy ice cream – chocolate, vanilla.”

Greatest Sports Moment: “Well, probably the…been so many. There’s been so many, I really can’t ex(plain)…I don’t know which one is the greatest moment. I guess you’d have to put The Belmont Stakes with Smarty Jones right there. That one. But of course, Strike The Gold’s Derby. There’s so many of them. Albert The Great. So many. Who knows.”

Most Painful Moment: “Quite a few. I don’t even want to go there. But quite a few [laughs]. Quite a few.”

Favorite Racetrack: “That’s easy. Belmont, Saratoga, Keeneland, Churchill Downs. Very easy [laughs]. That’s an easy one.”

Favorite Horses To Watch: “Favorite of all-time? Let me see…of all-time…I used to like Buck Passer. When I was a younger guy I loved watching him. (What about him?) Just the explosion. The explosion. When he had that burst of speed. Come from behind. He was gorgeous to watch. Buck Passer. I’m going back. Buck Passer ran in the late ’60s. Other horses…so many great ones. Obviously the normal ones…Kelso, Spectacular Bid, Secretariat, so many. They were great.”

Favorite Vacation Spot: “Don’t have any [laughs]. Probably Cooperstown.”

Childhood Dream: “Like everybody else – a ballplayer.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “Just honesty. And I think someone that doesn’t look down on someone. To have the quality that you treat everybody equal and no matter how much money you have or how much power you have, you still treat someone with respect and decency. That, to me, is what we call class.”
