Status: Two-time Olympic champion in 200 meters.

DOB: May 15, 1982 In: Trelawny, Jamaica

Track Inspirations: “I would say Merlene Ottey. She’s a great athlete and I always just watched and admired her.”

Hobbies/Leisure Activities: “I like to read, listen to music and watch TV. I don’t do any other sports besides track. I do a little bowling sometimes.”

Favorite Movies: “I don’t really have any favorites, I think it just depends on the movies that are out at the time. So I don’t really have any favorites.”

Favorite TV Show: “I like to watch comedy, a lot of comedies.”

Musical Tastes: “I really like reggae but I listen to a little of everything. Bob Marley – he’s a great inspiration to me also. Mariah Carey.”

Last Book Read: “My book (“A Better You, Inspirations For Life’s Journey”). I read it again. I needed some inspiration, so.”

First Job: “Actually, I never worked before, besides being a professional athlete.”

First Car: “[Laughs] Ford Escord – silver.”

Pre-Race Feeling: “I’m always nervous. And I always just try to be confident. And just have a positive mind. But I’m always nervous. Just cannot wait to get the race over with. It’s a business when you’re on the track. Sometimes things happen around me but I don’t see because it’s business. It is your business in the race to beat her, so there are no friends on the track. Off the track but not on the track. Everybody want to win. And the person that is more mentally focused – most of the time – is gonna be the one to cross the finish line first. So it’s business.”

Early Track Memory: “When I first started in track I normally get beat. I didn’t start out winning. I remember in high school, it wasn’t until my second to last year in high school when I really started to win almost all my races every time I run. I just stayed confident and just kept working hard.”

Favorite Meal: “Ackee and saltfish, dumplings. It’s Jamaican national dish.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Rum raisin – off-season [smiles]. Not able to eat during season. Off-season it’s gotta be rum raisin [smiles].”

Greatest Sports Moment: “I think that came after Beijing, going into the Olympic Games as defending (200 meter) champion – and to win with a super time (21.74). And also to become the second-fastest woman in history, has been great. And right now it’s my most memorable Olympic moment.”

Most Painful Moment: “Hmmm. I cannot recall a painful moment. Because whenever something happens, I just look at it as, it was meant to happen. It’s just part of life.”

Funny Track Memory: “Not that I can recall right now. My group – it’s always fun being in my group. Because we normally make a lot of jokes off each other. Basically, everybody in my group if funny, from my agent right down to every athlete. We just try to be happy every time we’re together.”

Childhood Dream: “When I was growing up I wanted to be an accounts teacher but my dream was always to win an Olympic gold medal in either the one or the two.”

Favorite Places To Compete: “It’s always fun competing where there are a lot of Jamaicans because they just give you the energy, that drive, the motivation to run fast. They are so energetic when cheering for me. So I always like competing in front of Jamaicans. I like to compete in the U.K., Jamaica and New York.”

Most Memorable Race: “I would say it was the 200 meters in Beijing. It was a perfect race. I executed well, maintained my form well. It was a great race.”

Favorite Athletes To Watch: “Merlene Ottey. I watch a lot of athletes, especially in sprints. Because the more you watch other people compete, the more you learn. So I just admire a lot of people. I like the Williams sisters. Kobe, LeBron and Shaq. Muhammad Ali, though he’s retired now. And his daughter Laila has a really good career so I admire her also.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “Kindness, good-hearted people.”

Status: Former ATP world #1, French Open, Australian Open, 2000 Olympic Champion. Led Russia to first Davis Cup victory in 2002.

Ht: 6-3 Wt: 185

DOB: February 18, 1974 In: Sochi, Russia

Tennis Inspirations: “There are a few people I loved to watch while (I) was young. (Who?) Well, obviously Borg was one of them. Johnny Mac was one of the few.”

Hobbies/Interests: “Right now? I’m busy. I’m family man. I got little daughter (Aleysa) that I’m taking care of. Part time TV stuff, so.”

First Tennis Memory: “Oh. Been a few. First time I traveled I was six-years-old, to a junior tournament. That still keeps in my mind. To inside Russia, one of the national tournaments. (How did you do?) I don’t remember. But that first time is the memory.”

Greatest Sports Moment: “I can say there are four or five.”

Most Painful Moment: “Ooh…ah…ooh. You know, I’m gonna say there been a few where I had a chance to of perhaps winning the Slams that I didn’t do. I would say that ones.”

Favorite Tournaments: “Maybe a few countries. Russia was one of them. Australia, France – where I had my most success.”

Closest Tennis Friends: “There are many. There are many.”

Funniest Players Encountered: “While I was playing – Goran. Goran had the best sense of humor of all.”

Toughest Competitors Encountered: “There are like ten guys.”

Which Matches Did You Feel At Your Absolute Best: “French Open ‘96. Because that’s the tournament I won where no one could even get close to me. (What happened?) All aspects came together at right moment. I had signs that I was going to play well there. Beating Pete Sampras 62 62 the week before.”

Childhood Dreams: “As a young one I wanted to win, first, tournaments. Then, obviously, the appetite got bigger. Then, of course, when you accomplish one, there’s always another.”

Pre-Match Feeling: “Pretty much same routine all the time – warm-up, have a little bite before the match, then just get ready.”

Favorite Movies: “I don’t recall. Nothing comes to mind quickly.”

Last Book Read: “Also long time ago, hasn’t been any lately.”

Musical Tastes: “Just pop, whatever pops up on the radios.”

Favorite Meal: “Russian.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Chocolate.”

Funny Tennis Memory: “Nothing comes to mind in the moment.”

Embarrassing Tennis Memory: “There was a few ones. Pretty much almost lost 60 60. (To who?) 60 61 to Jeff Tarango, believe it or not. Back in ‘94 at one of the tournaments (in Bordeaux, France).”

Favorite Athletes To Watch: “Always thought that (Michael) Jordan was the best athlete of all time. I like to watch the New York Yankees, I like to go to Yankee Stadium when I’m in New York. I did like to watch Mike Tyson when he was the best. (Evander) Holyfield I admire for his courage and his toughness.”

Favorite Tennis Players To Watch: “Oh, Nadal is the most person that I like to watch besides, of course, Safin. Many people in our country miss him. Missing his best days of glory. (Why Nadal?) Well, I think he’s a character, he brings charisma to the courts. He’s got good, fresh energy.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “Honesty. That was, at least how I was with anyone. Anything that came up to my mind I was always straight to the people, never hide anything, so, that’s what I admire.”

Career Accomplishments: First Russian to achieve #1 ranking on May 3, 1999; Won 1996 French Open and 1999 Australian Open; Won Olympic gold medal at 2000 Olympics with five-set win vs. Haas; Lead Russia to defeat France 3-2 in 2002 Davis Cup final – Russia’s first Davis Cup victory; Winner of 26 career ATP singles titles and 27 doubles; Career Earnings over $23 million; Won four Grand Slam doubles titles; Won Moscow ATP event five years in a row – after fifth title donated prize money of $137,000 to families of victims of Oct. 4, 2001 plane crash in Black Sea.

Childhood Hero: “Yuri Vlasov — Olympic champion (weight-lifting in super heavyweight division in 1960).”
Inspiration: “The biggest inspiration is that I represent my country and the sport. I help people see that I fight for my country and that’s what drives me. The sport has given a lot to me and I fight not only for my country but for my people, for my orthodox heritage and background in religion. And I’m very proud of that. And when I go into the ring I have the entire country and my people behind me.”
Hobbies/Interests: “Drawing, Reading. I try to spend a lot of my free time with my family, daughter, and wife. I like to draw if I have some time and inspiration. I like to listen to music and read books. Sometimes, in the winter, I like to swim in an ice hole.”
Nicknames: The Last Emperor, Terminator, Cyborg.
Favorite Movies: “Troy, Gladiator.”
Favorite TV Shows: “I don’t have any real favorites. I watch TV when I have time.”
Childhood Dreams: “Like all little boys I have many different ones.”
Pre-Fight Feeling: “I try not to think, try to get rid of thoughts. (When the fight begins) I fight this fight as if it is my last fight. I try to use my mind to win this fight.”
