Status: #16 seed at the Sony Ericsson in Miami is in the semifinals after defeating Federer and Verdasco in three set thrillers.

Ht: 6-5 Wt: 200

DOB: September 17, 1985 in Valasske Mezirici, Czech Republic

Tennis Heroes/Inspirations: “If I have some heroes in tennis? No I don’t have any heroes, not in tennis, not in other kind of sports, nothing. I’m trying to play and be myself.”

Hobbies/Leisure Activities: “Yeah, of course my hobbies — if you are in pro tennis you don’t have much more time. So if it’s chance to go watch some good films, cinema, listening to some music. And I think for a tennis player the best is relaxing.”

Early Tennis Memory: “My father (Martin) told me when I was starting to play tennis I was always hitting the ball — not ever in the court [smiles]. But I hit the ball with the racquet not missing the ball. (At least) no missing the ball.”

Pre-Match Feeling: “Whew. I’m trying to concentrate for my match and feeling — sometimes I’m nervous, sometimes not, depends on which kind of match is it. So some special feeling? No I don’t have it.”

Favorite Meal: “I like a lot of different meals. But favorite…let’s say chicken and some pasta because for tennis you can eat some.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Chocolate.”

Favorite Movies: “I like the English name — three movies Lord Of The Rings. They were amazing, it was unbelievable.”

Musical Tastes: “I like a lot of the performers like Metallica, U2 and the style like this, not techno.”

Greatest Sports Moment: “Win in Paris Bercy (defeated Ljubicic in five sets in 2005). And of course beat Roger Federer at Olympic Games (2004).”

Most Painful Moment: “I don’t like to lose any match. So every match that I lose is painful.”

Favorite Tournament(s): “Outside the Grand Slams? Dubai. It’s a beautiful place. Something different. And it’s nice.”

Closest Tennis Friends: “Of course your kind of friend is you coach because you are spending a lot of time with your coach. And I think a lot of players in the tennis, you’re friends with everybody. But closest friend — I don’t have only one friend. But I have a lot of friends with the Czech.”

Funniest Player Encountered: “I don’t know. I don’t have any special just one who is the most funny.”

Toughest Competitors: “I have to say Roger. Of course the toughest match was with Roger in Australia because he’s the top player of the world and it was the toughest match for me, for this time.”

Favorite Vacation Spot: “I haven’t been there but I would like to go to Bora Bora.”

On Win Over Federer In Miami 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6(6): “The match like this, to beat the No. 1 player in the world, the best player so far, you know, it’s great feeling, you know, just to go through. But still, it was not a final. There is another match waiting next day, another really tough opponent…I need to take all the positive things, all the confidence from this match and just go next for next match. Be ready for the other one. Then we can be let’s say talking it was good tournament with couple of good wins or something like that. But so far, yeah, extremely happy after that match. But I’m looking forward to next matches.”

“The last match before this one we played in Australia I was two sets up, so, you know, if we gonna play for just best of three sets, then I would win the match again. But that one was different, you know, best of five sets and at the Grand Slam. So, you know, he came strongly back and won that match, and he deserved it and played well. This one was another chance. I was trying to just go for it same as the match in Melbourne, and finally it happened.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “People has to be funny, fair and not be (like), Okay, you are good, good. And he goes to somebody else and says, Oh, he’s bad. And like this.”

Status: Legendary tennis coach and founder of the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, FL. Credited with developing world class champion players such as Agassi, Sharapova, Courier, Seles, Jankovic, Pierce. Has also worked with Haas, Mirnyi, Becker, Malisse, Rios and Vaidisova.

DOB: July 31, 1931 In: Pelham, N.Y.

First Tennis Memory: “Probably down in North Miami Beach. When a person said, Nick, can you show me the eastern forehand grip? So my son’s mother looked at me and said, Go down the street and ask coach Slim Harbett what that meant. I can always remember that. Because I didn’t even know what an eastern forehand was.”

Musical Tastes: “Barry White, Bee Gees, Billy Ray Cyrus – I was just in Iraq with him.”

Favorite Movies: “I like The Godfather, those type of movies. Goodfellas.”

Favorite TV Show: “Law & Order.” Last Book Read: “I don’t even know. I don’t read too many books.”

Greatest Career Moment: “Is that God has given me the energy and spirit to continue doing what I’ve been doing. My greatest moment is – know I can continue my career.”

Most Painful Moment: “I think one of them was when I wrote the letter to Andre Agassi. Rather than going out there. That was something I shouldn’t have done. I should have gone out there.”

Favorite Tournaments: “Of course, there’s nothing like the U.S. Open. But I also like the Miami tournament, it’s got a lil bit of everybody, so I always like the Miami Sony Ericsson (now NASDAQ). But I enjoy the Wimbledon and U.S. Open. There’s such a contrast of audience and that’s what makes it very interesting to me.”

Current Car: “I drive Jeep (black).”

Favorite Players To Watch Now: “It’s quite interesting now, to see the Henin and Clijsters comeback. That’s interesting to see. There’s so many matches I’ve watched. What’s interesting was the Boris Becker-Andre match in Davis Cup in Munich was a great match. (Becker won in five after losing the first two sets.) I was there. I enjoyed that match (recently re-aired by The Tennis Channel.) And at that time, the Davis Cup was the Davis Cup. People fought to play on the team. Now you have the same people play on the team.”

Funny Tennis Memory: “Well, not knowing what Andre was gonna wear when he went to tournaments [smiles]. When he was 14-15, you never knew what Andre was gonna dress up in – cutoffs, jeans, lipstick, rouge, hair pinned up [smiles]. So it was interesting. You never knew what he was gonna come out in.”

Embarrassing Tennis Memory: “I haven’t had any embarrassing tennis memories. Embarrassing to me – when I sat in Andre’s box, working with both Courier and Andre. I was embarrassed that I did something like that. (At French Open.)”

Toughest Competitors Encountered: “One of the fiercest competitors that I ever had to play against was Lleyton Hewitt. He was…he fought, he fought. Monica Seles fought. Courier. Sunvabitch, what he lacked, he made up by blood and guts. Nadal. That’s my boy.”

Funniest Players: “Well, if you look at some of the remarks that Boris Becker used to say very quietly. Red (Ayme) and I took Boris over. I went over to Munich and he was a little overweight. So Red went over first to get him into shape. And for the first two or three weeks, I never said anything. Boris turned around and said, Mr. B, can you speak? And I said, Mr. B, when I speak to you, I better know what I’m speaking about. (Becker replied) Mr. B, we’re gonna do well together. That was pretty interesting.”

Childhood Dream: “I just wanted to do the things that came in my head. Didn’t even think about it. Came in my head, do it. So I never thought whether or not I could do it. I just went ahead and did it.”

Favorite Sports Outside Of Tennis: “Golf and football.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “I like being with people that feel they’re a winner.”

Toughest Competitors: “I don’t know if there is one that I fear the most. (Toughest to play?) They can all be tough. I just go out and play my best against all opponents.”

Favorite Players To Watch: “I like watching Federer play.”

Funny Tennis Memory: “I think you have to see this point. Chakvetadze, she hits a shot, she gets an easy overhead. The opponent is standing far behind the baseline and not even going for the shot. She hit the overhead – she mis-hit it. And she goes for the backhand and she hits it in. She won the point anyways.”

Embarrassing Tennis Memory: “That’s a tough one. I don’t know. I lost love and one in doubles in French Open (to Sugiyama/Srebotnik). I didn’t think that was fun.”

Last Vacation: “After Wimbledon I went to Copenhagen for a few days my birthday.”

Favorite Sports Outside Tennis: “I like soccer and basketball.”

Best You Ever Felt On Court: “I think my first final in Stockholm last summer. I felt like every ball was just sitting there and then taking the trophy and winning, that was great.”

Personality Qualities Most Admired: “Honesty, polite, nice, smart.”
